SEETHA

RAMAYANA

The beauty of goddess Earth mortal eyes cannot see in its fullness, but we get glimpses of it as we gaze with grateful hearts on the emerald green or golden ripeness of spring-tide or autumn fields, or with awe and adoration on the glories of mountain and valley, rivers and ocean. This loveliness was Seetha in its entirely. Kamban would have it that Seetha's beauty threw in  to the shade Lakshmi herself who came up the Nectar as the Ocean of Milk was being churned. This child of divine beauty was brought up by King Janaka and his dear queen.

When Seetha reached the age of marriage Janaka was sad that he would have to part with her. Though he tried hard, he was for long unable to choose  a prince worthy of Seetha. Many kings came to Mithila seeking Seetha's hand, but in Janaka's view none of them was good enough. The King anxiously thought over the matter and came to a decision.

Long ago, pleased with a yaaga performed by Janaka. Varuna presented to him Rudra's bow and two quivers. That was ancient heavenly bow which no ordinary man could even move. This was kept by him as honoured heir-loom.Since only an exceptional man could be considered worthy of Seetha, Janaka issued this proclamation: Seetha, my daughter will be given in marriage to the prince who can lift, bend and string the bow of Siva which Varuna gave me and to non other"

Many princes  who had heard of Seetha's beauty, went to Mithila only to return disappointment. None could fulfill the condition.

Led by Viswaamitra, the rishis from Siddaasrama were proceeding to Mithila , with bullock-carts transporting their luggage. The animals and the birds in the Aashrama set out to follow Viswaamitra. but he gently bade them stay behind.

It was evening when they reached the river Sona. There they rested for the night. Viswaamitra recounting to Raama and Lakshamana the history of the place. Getting up in the morning they continued their journey and crossed another river, not very deep and by noon they were at the Gang.

BHAGAVAD-GITA

2-61
One who restrains his senses, keeping them under full control, and fixes his consciousness upon Me,is known as a man of study intelligence.

2-62
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.

2-63
From anger complete  delusion arises , and from delusion bewilderment of memory. when memory is bewildered , intelligence is lost. and when intelligence is lost, one falls down again  into the material pool.

2-64

But a person free from all attachment and aversion and able to control his senses through regulative principles of freedom can obtain the complete mercy of the Lord.
